What the first answer means
GO means the complete selected pre-game block is a good measurable weather fit: rain remains below the Tailgating caution limits, and wind, apparent temperature, UV and severe-weather checks do not force the result lower. WAIT means the block is mixed or a later window is meaningfully better. NOT TODAY means a serious weather signal or poor complete-window fit makes the outdoor plan unreliable.

How the Tailgating score works
A tailgate combines standing outdoors, food, exposed parking areas, canopies, folding furniture and several hours of setup or waiting. GoodDayTo therefore looks beyond a single forecast icon. It measures apparent temperature, rain probability, forecast precipitation, average wind, gusts, UV, severe-weather codes and every hour in the requested duration.
The one-, three- and five-hour choices are real complete-block checks. One hour can cover a quick setup, three hours suits many pre-game gatherings, and five hours can cover a longer event. GoodDayTo does not silently shorten a requested block to manufacture a better answer. If the final selected hour has a strong rain signal, two pleasant earlier hours cannot hide it.

Rain limits across the full pre-game window
GoodDayTo adds the forecast rain amounts across the selected hours and checks the highest hourly precipitation probability. At least 0.5 mm total rain, or 70% rain probability in any selected hour, caps the result at NOT TODAY (45). At least 0.1 mm, or 40% probability, caps it at WAIT (70). These are conservative planning guardrails for an exposed gathering, not venue cancellation rules.
Probability and amount are different signals. The National Weather Service explains that precipitation probability is the chance of measurable precipitation at the forecast point; it is not the percentage of the parking lot or the percentage of the event that will be wet. A practical example
Imagine a three-hour tailgate where the first two hours are mild and dry but the final hour reaches 72% rain probability. Averaging the three hours can make the block look acceptable, even though guests, food and equipment may still be outside when the rain arrives. The complete-window limit caps that plan at NOT TODAY. A final-hour 45% signal would cap it at WAIT. If every selected hour stays below 40%, with no meaningful forecast rain and otherwise favourable conditions, the rain rule does not prevent GO.
Wind, heat and UV still matter
Parking areas are often more exposed than gardens or city streets. Gusts can catch a canopy, move paper goods and signs, cool guests, or make lightweight furniture harder to control. GoodDayTo includes both average wind and gusts, but it cannot know the rating, anchoring method or condition of any canopy. Product instructions and venue restrictions take priority.
Dry weather can still be a poor fit when heat and sun exposure are high. Apparent temperature and UV influence the activity score because people may spend hours on asphalt with little shade. Bring water, use appropriate sun protection and choose a cooler window where possible. The tool does not know individual health needs, medications, shade, hydration or how hot a vehicle or cooking surface becomes.
Lightning and official warnings override the plan
Thunderstorm signals independently cap the recommendation. The National Weather Service says there is no safe place outside when thunderstorms are in the area and recommends a lightning safety plan for organised outdoor activities. A canopy or open-sided shelter is not a safe lightning refuge; a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle is the practical shelter. See the official NWS outdoor activity lightning guidance.
Always follow venue announcements, emergency staff and local warnings. GoodDayTo cannot see a stadium’s evacuation plan, parking-lot closure, lightning radius or restart policy. If thunder is heard or officials tell guests to shelter, act on that instruction rather than waiting for the score to update.
Weather suitability is not food safety
Tailgating often involves meat, dairy, prepared dishes and coolers, but GoodDayTo does not measure food temperature. USDA tailgating guidance says food should not remain out of the cooler or off the grill for more than two hours, reduced to one hour when the outside temperature is above 90°F (about 32°C). A GO result never certifies a cooler, grill, fuel setup or food-handling practice. Use a food thermometer where required, keep perishable food at safe temperatures and follow current official advice. This safety layer is intentionally separate from the weather score.
Assumptions and limitations
Forecast data is hourly and location based. Small local showers can miss the selected forecast point, and conditions can change after the result loads. GoodDayTo does not know whether the parking area is sheltered, already waterlogged, surrounded by high-rise wind effects, or covered by a venue-specific warning.
It also cannot confirm the event start, parking access, tickets, tailgating permission, grill or fuel rules, alcohol restrictions, canopy rules, toilets, accessible routes, crowding or security instructions. Choose a duration that covers the actual time outside, then combine the weather result with the organiser’s latest information and your own equipment and needs.
